Shelly's Tips for Choosing The Correct Sized Mattress

Are you looking to buy a new mattress? Do you need a new mattress because maybe it has been 30 years? Or are you moving and need one simply because you sold all of your old bedroom furniture? Or maybe you are looking to upgrade? Or perhaps you are looking for a larger or smaller sized mattress.

Whatever your particular reason, you should inform yourself about mattresses beforehand to ensure you purchase the right one for you. While there are many things to consider before buying a new mattress, I will be talking specifically about getting the correct size of mattress.

Remember that a mattress is a major investment.

It is something that you will have for many, many years.

One of the biggest decisions in buying a new mattress is the size to buy.

The mattress size that you choose will depend on 2 simple factors.

1. The size of mattress or bed you want and/or need

2. The size of your bedroom

Most people are aware of most of the standard mattress sizes available in North America, in general. They probably have never measured their mattress or know the actual mattress sizes in inches. So, before we get to the actual decision about what size mattress you would like to buy, we will discuss the sizes of mattresses in North America. They come in various standard sizes, with a few less standard sizes.

You can get a mattress in size Twin, Full or Double, Queen, King and California King. Depending on your needs and the size of your bedroom, you can generally choose from one of these sizes. If you happen to have a custom bed frame, you may need to find a custom mattress maker, usually within your area.

Twin size mattress measures 39” wide x 75” long.

Twin xl mattress measures 39” wide x 80” long.

Full or double mattresses measure 54” W x 75” L.

Full XL mattress measures 54” wide x 80” long.

Queen size mattress measures 60” wide x 80” long.

King size - some call it Eastern King size mattress measures 76” wide x 80” long.

California King size mattress measures 72” x 84”.

A split King size mattresses is just that – 2 separate mattresses put together to form a king size – each mattress measures 38”wide x 80”long

So, now you know the standard sizes available, you can make your first decision, about the size of mattress you would like to have. Ask yourself, how many people would you like to sleep on this mattress? Generally, if you need the bed for 2 people, you need to choose a double or full or larger – double, queen and king size are all suitable.

Another consideration depending on the number of people going to sleep in the bed, the size of the people may be a factor. If you or your spouse, for example, are over 6 feet tall, and weigh over 250 lbs, you probably want a larger mattress in order to accommodate a larger framed person. For a 1 person bed, you can go with a Twin size mattress or Twin XL,,,or even larger if you have the space in your bedroom and/ or you just want more sleeping space

Size of your bedroom
Now, figure out what size will fit in your bedroom. Most everyone will want to choose the largest size possible simply for the sake of comfort. However, you should be sure that the mattress will actually fit comfortably in your room. For example, a King size bed and mattress will not fit in every bedroom. You should have at least 2-3 feet on each side of the bed for ease of movement (and for safety). A King size mattress takes up about 6.5 feet of space in width. Based on that, you should have a space in your room with at least 10.5 feet wide….and that would be the absolute minimum. You really should have even more space, like about 12.5 feet. So, if you have a room with dimensions less than 10 feet, you may want to opt for a Queen size bed instead of a King size mattress.

If you simply want more space in the room and the bed is only for 1 person, you can certainly choose a twin sized mattress or twin xl.

Remember too, many people put beds directly against the wall. If this is your case, you may be able to fit a larger bed in a smaller room. However, when 2 people are sleeping in the bed, one of those 2 will have a harder and longer time to get out of bed…and may even inadvertently wake up their partner in the middle of the night if they have to go to the bathroom, and would be forced to climb over the other.

So in conclusion, if you are in the midst of buying a new mattress, please consider the amount of space you want in the bed as well as the actual space you have available in your bedroom. As it is easy to say, I want the biggest bed possible, be realistic about your bedroom size and space before making your new mattress purchase. Because it is a large purchase dollar wise, you will own it for several years (not a purchase you make often), you will have to deal with the inconveniences of getting rid of your old mattress and have to arrange and possibly be home for delivery for your new mattress, the fact that you may get the mattress home and you may not like it…then what do you do?...you should take some time to consider these factors in order to ensure you buy the right mattress.

However, I should point out that there are numerous mattress manufacturers who are taking mattress buying to a completely different level. These mattress companies will now deliver direct to your door with free shipping, offer extended comfort guarantees and even offer free return shipping, if you are not satisfied with the mattress. Many of the mattresses are shipped in rolls so that the transportation and moving is much easier. A king size rolled up mattress will be able to fit down a very narrow hallway or doorway where a standard king sized hard mattress would not – very convenient.

One mattress company doing this in full is Nectar mattresses. This is one of the best (although there are some others too) online mattress offer I have seen. Nectar mattresses offer all of these goodies – free shipping, complete with a 365 day trial period, and free return shipping. And the mattress is packaged in a compact shipping box for easy transport. Who could ask for more? Tell me more about NECTAR mattress.

Another mattress company offering a great trial offer is Dream Cloud - free shipping in a compact box and a full year trial period. Find out more about Dream Cloud mattresses.

Full disclaimer here...I have not tried either one of these mattresses mentioned here (as I am not in need of a new mattress right now) but, with the offers of free ship, easy transport and a full 365 day trial period, I really cannot see what you have to lose in trying at least one of them, if you are in the market for a new mattress.
