Using The Paint Colour Black in Your Family Room

When it comes to choosing paint colors for your home, for most, BLACK is not usually at the top of the colour list. Paint color is a choice that can make a big impact on your home decor and can help define your style.

Depending on whether you have a basement family room or main floor TV living room, the colors most people tend to choose are lighter shades of greys, whites and beige taupes.

While these are beautiful colors for a neutral home and room, have you ever considered using black as a paint color for that room. Probably not, right? If you are brave enough to even consider the color black as a wall paint color, then continue to read on...

Do not worry, you are not alone. Most people looking to paint their homes and in particular, family or TV rooms, would never even choose a color remotely close to black for painting their walls. Many people believe that darker colors will create a dungeon like look or will feel too dark for comfort.

For some, the color black is for Halloween or for any formal occasion dress wear. A black tuxedo, that little black dress or the ever common black witch costume for halloween - these are probably the images which come to your head when you think of the color black.

I will be honest...this article is not really trying to convince you to paint your whole room black. I realize that taking that step is a very large committment, one not really accessible or believable for most people. So, do not be afraid...not just yet.

The idea I am trying to put forward is really quite simple and not much of a commitment.

I am only suggesting that you try painting what is somewhat like a feature wall but, the idea is not actually to feature the tv but, instead to camouflage it and make it blend into the wall.

Wall TV painted Black

So, here it is...my version of painting just the wall behind your big 'ugly' flat screen television.

Even though I do like the colour black, it is certainly not my favorite paint color. (I really don't have a favorite paint color, though...I am equal opportunity when it comes to colors...it all depends on the room and your needs for that room.)

The real reason for painting this wall black is to camouflage that big behemoth of a black TV, as well as all of the black electronic components which blend into the wall as well - even the speakers are much less noticeable (one of my other big pet peeves...)

I really have a problem with rooms where the focal point is the television. If I had my choice, the TV would be moved to another room but...we all have to make compromises so that the whole family is happy, right :-) Painting the wall black was my compromise if the television had to stay in this living room.

The wall has been several colors before this decision to go black - which I intend to keep for as long as...well...forever or as long as the TV is in this room. It is the perfect color for that wall. I am so happy with the fact that the TV is no longer the focal point of the wall unless it is on, of course.

Now, in order to make the TV the focal point, we can put on one of those (some may call cheesy) fireplace or aquarium DVD's. We could even make a DVD with our own artwork in order to have an artwork display on the wall instead of some big black box on the wall.

As I have said many times before, don't be afraid of black - it is just another colour on the list of possible color choices for your home decor - if used in the appropriate way.

If you are not quite ready to make a commitment to a painted black wall, then perhaps you can add some black home decorating furniture and accessories.
